$1.5 million of funding for the restoration of St James Theatre is wonderful news for Auckland, says Auckland Central MP Nikki Kaye.
Minister for Arts, Culture and Heritage Maggie Barry confirmed the $1.5 million restoration grant would come from the Heritage EQUIP fund for privately-owned, earthquake-risk buildings.
“I want to acknowledge Minister Barry for her strong personal support for the project and her advocacy on projects in Auckland,” says Ms Kaye. “In December 2015 Auckland Council committed in principle to add $15 million to the estimated cost of renovating the theatre.
“The grant is another step forward in the plan to restore the St James.
“As the local MP for Auckland Central I have advocated very strongly for this project and held a number of meetings with people involved in supporting the project over the last few years.
“I understand that those involved in the project will be putting in a further application for Government funding from the Regional Culture and Heritage (RCHF) funding. The building’s owner is continuing to work with officials on an application.
“The St James Theatre is an iconic cultural asset that I am focused on ensuring we restore for future generations. It's an important treasure for central Auckland and I look forward to continuing to work hard to ensure it is fully restored.”
